Maxi Shackle - Security for Concrete Block Walls, Gates, etc

Shed Shackle Centre SectionThe Pragmasis Maxi Shackle is a new type of security anchor intended for awkward situations, such as blockwork walls, gate posts and several other places where an anchor is needed but a concrete floor anchor is not an option.

The Maxi Shackle is a halfway house between a normal ground anchor and our Shed Shackle. It provides a larger, more spread out, fitting area in comparison with a conventional anchor, but not as large as the Shed Shackle that is intended to fit to the wooden wall of a shed.

The Maxi Shackle has previously been Sold Secure approved (see below) and is made of hardened steel with a zinc pretreatment and powder coated finish. It is coloured bright red to be obvious to a prospective thief.

The shackle area is large enough to accept any of our Protector range of chains, including the 16mm version.

The Maxi Shackle is available with a choice of fitting kits:

  • Concrete Block Wall using shield anchors (otherwise known as expanding bolts, similar to that shown to the right, here);
  • Steel allthread studs, for fitting to round steel gateposts and similar, where there is access to both sides of the post;
  • Chemical resin capsules, for fitting to items that are too large or too awkward to drill right through and where the shield anchors would not be suitable (e.g. large wooden gate posts).

In general, the Maxi Shackle will not be as secure as a conventional ground anchor, such as our Torc anchor, fitted to a good concrete floor. The Maxi Shackle is aimed at those situations where a concrete floor is not available or not appropriate/convenient.

The Maxi Shackle is commonly used in conjunction with a chain & lock for securing bicycles and horse tack to the wall in a garage, for securing field gates for horse owners (preventing the gate being lifted off its posts without needing it to be welded in place), and for many other awkward security requirements.

Maxi Shackle Features:

  • Ideal for securing medium to high value bicycles and landscaping/gardening equipment
  • Ideal for equestrian applications - Combat the growing threat of horse theft and tack theft!
  • Designed for easy DIY installation
  • Uses a wide fitting to cover a large area of the wall/post/etc
  • Hardened steel and welded construction
  • Difficult and noisy to attack - Deters thieves
  • Big enough to take heavy duty chains as well as U-locks and cable locks - The opening measures more than 50mm x 50mm (the sloping sides are a minimum of 50mm apart, widening to beyond 80mm)
  • Previously Sold Secure Approved (see below)
  • British design and manufacture - Support British industry!
  • Fitting kit includes all parts required
  • About 30 minutes to fit - Easy-to-follow and thoroughly illustrated instructions are included.

Below are some example arrangements of bicycles etc secured with the Maxi Shackle:

Maxi Shackle Securing Bicycles to a Blockwork Wall
This is a typical Maxi Shackle installation in a domestic garage, here securing two bicycles with a single Protector 13mm chain and Squire SS50CS padlock.

Maxi Shackle Securing a field gate to a metal post
Here is a Maxi Shackle fitted to a metal gate post to prevent the gate being lifted off its hinges, whilst allowing the gate to be opened and removed when required. This is shown with a Protector 13mm chain and Squire ASWL2 warehouse/block padlock. Note that the chain is deliberately entwined around the gate to prevent a thief from releasing it by just cutting a single bar of the gate.

Rear view of a Maxi Shackle Securing a field gate to a metal post
This is the rear view of the Maxi Shackle fitment with steel allthread studs. This fitting kit uses security shear nuts on both ends of the studs. Once fitted, shear nuts expose only a smooth conical surface so there is nothing that a thief can easily undo. (The black items are vinyl caps that cover the end of the studs, to avoid injury.)

Maxi Shackle fitted to a wooden gate post
A Maxi Shackle fitted using chemical resin capsules and high tensile bolts to avoid drilling right through a large wooden post surrounded by a spikey hedge! Again, this is shown with a Protector 13mm chain and Squire padlock, entwined around the gate to prevent a thief from releasing it by just cutting a single bar of the gate.

Maxi Shackle fitted to a site box
The Maxi Shackle allthread fitting can be adapted to secure other objects, such as a contractor's site box, as shown here. In this case, the inside of the site box is protected by its lockable lid, so conventional high tensile bolts (not supplied in the allthread kit) have been used coming through from the inside, in place of the normal lengths of studding. Shear nuts are used on the outside, only, here. The site box is chained with a 16mm chain to a ground anchor on the floor (not visible in this photo). This allows the site box to be moved simply by unlocking the chain.

Fitting Kit Interchangeability: The Maxi Shackle is available with a choice of fitting kits but the metalwork of the actual Maxi Shackle itself does vary as well: For example, the Concrete Block and the chemical resin fitment use countersunk holes to suit the high tensile bolts, and the allthread fitting kit has larger holes to suit the allthread used for fixing.

Sold Secure Approval: The Maxi Shackle approval was in July 2008 and remained valid until June 2009. It has not been re-submitted. It has not failed a test. The core metalwork is still manufactured to the same specification as was approved (a wider choice of fixings is now available, however).
