The Pragmasis Shed Shackle is aimed at improving security for wooden sheds. Thefts from sheds have become more and more frequent and the options for improving your shed security have been either expensive, impractical, or both. Until now!
The Shed Shackle reinforces a large area of the wooden wall of the shed so that a thief would have to saw or smash a huge section, making a lot of noise and taking a lot of time. (And even then, this would leave a large metal/wooden contraption still secured to your valuables!)
Unlike a conventional ground anchor, the Shed Shackle doesn't require a heavy concrete floor to the shed and actually improves the strength of the woodwork - your shed becomes steel reinforced!
Customer Comment: "You might like to know that we recently had our shed broken into with one bike stolen.
However, the two bikes we had secured to the Shed Shackle were not touched!! So we have been asked by our residents to order another!! We all think the Shed Shackle is fab!!"
If you have high value items in need of protection, a good concrete floor with a Torc Ground Anchor will undoubtedly give you better security, at a higher price, but if a 100mm+ thickness concrete floor is unrealistic or if the overall cost would be prohibitive, a Shed Shackle and medium security chain & lock offer a pragmatic and easy-to-use alternative that is still likely to deter the thief.

What's a shear nut? Why can't a thief simply use a spanner to undo the fixings? Shear nuts have special heads that comprise a conical smooth-surfaced part, which has the thread inside it, and a hexagonal bit on the top that allows you to use a conventional spanner to tighten them up. The key is that as they get tight, the hexagonal bit snaps off. Hence, once the Shed Shackle is installed with all the nuts tight and all the hexagonal bits snapped off (sheared off), there is nothing left to put a spanner onto. The threadlock coating pre-applied to the bolts makes it even harder for a thief that might attempt to grip hold of the smooth conical part that remains of the nut (although that is not really necessary as the shear nuts alone are sufficiently tamper-proof). The outside of the shed just exposes the dome-headed end of the coach bolts, so not only the nuts have no remaining hexagonal part to put a spanner on, neither do the bolts.
What about a Shed Alarm? There a several battery-powered shed alarms available from DIY stores and these offer a valuable additional deterrent. Their fundamental weakness, however, is that the thief is already inside the shed when the alarm goes off! The surprise might be enough to make the thief leave empty-handed, but many times alarms go ignored and if you have valuables that are not physically secured there is a good chance he will take something with him. Using a Shed Shackle will surely increase the time required and the thief's risk of being caught.
Suitability: The Shed Shackle is designed to be fitted to sheds made with framing members from 30mm up to 50mm deep, with up to 15mm additional thickness of boarding on the outside of the shed. Sheds built from thicker timbers can usually be accommodated by counterboring the bolt heads from the outside (the instructions provide more guidance), and we have longer bolts available that give another 20mm range (see below). The bolts are fully threaded so that they can be used on thin frames but these will naturally provide a poorer quality fixing than more substantially-framed structures. Note that you will need access to both sides of the shed wall where you want to mount the Shed Shackle. Access from the outside is only required to poke bolts through. If you have a window in the shed, it is usually preferable to put valuables under the window so that thieves are unable to see them. The Shed Shackle is ideally suited to fitting on the window wall but can be fitted on any wall providing you have access outside. If you intend to fit it to a shed wall with a fence behind, it is generally not difficult to lift a few of the fence boards and thereby gain access for the bolt holes. Be careful with sharp nails if you adopt this approach. (Of course, this assumes that you can get access to the other side of the fence!)
Tools Required to fit a Shed Shackle: Electric drill (10mm chuck); 16mm AF spanner or adjustable wrench; eye protection; pencil; possibly a small hammer.
Longer Bolts: 100mm bolts are offered at the same price but they are supplied without threadlock. If you choose the longer bolts, you may wish to use Loctite, which is available from DIY and car accessory stores.
